Previous To Filing A Claim
Before contacting your insurance adjuster and filing a claim, start your documentation.
- Take pictures
- Climb up on the roof and inspect it
- Gather any supporting evidence that the roof damage was not caused by your company
File Your Claim
If you are not able to work things out with the homeowner’s insurance agent and the homeowner, it is time to file a claim. This is the time you offer proof to the insurance company of the work you did. Pay attention to inspecting the areas of the damaged roof in question. The tip we would give is that you have asked your agent before you purchased your insurance policy about what would be covered and completely educated yourself with your policy. Nothing is worse than a surprise that you will have to pay for the damages.
Meeting The Adjuster
Have your documented damage and inspection report on hand to ensure everything damaged is included. During the visit, the roof and related areas will be inspected to see if the insurance company will pay the claim. Since you are the roofer and have done the repairs, you are the most knowledgeable about the roof claim. You have the ability to point things out. Now is the time to go over with the adjuster what the repairs between you and the homeowner were. The adjuster will decide whether there is coverage. If coverage is approved, the claim may be paid. Sometimes the homeowner will not be satisfied with the amount offered. It is now best to get multiple estimates to be submitted to the insurance company before a roofer can be hired to repair the roof or even a roof replacement.
After The Necessary Repair Is Done
As a roofer, you should take pride in having roof insurance coverage. After you do the repairs as a result of a claim, have a roofing inspector thoroughly inspect the roof and analyze the repair. He or she will also present the findings to the adjuster so that they know the scope of work that was required has been completed. Showing you have insurance and you care about the work you do will go a long way in making you successful in the roofing business.
There are certain costs that roofers must take on to maintain a successful business. While materials costs and, perhaps, marketing costs are fairly common, there’s an additional cost that’s essential. If you are serious about being a successful roofing contractor, roofing insurance needs to be a part of your yearly costs.
